What are rodents?

Rodents are mammals that, despite being wild animals, have come to depend on us for some of their food, water, and shelter. This dependence can make keeping rodents out of our homes and businesses a daunting but necessary task because of the problems they cause. When living outside in nature and away from people, mice and rats are helpful with maintaining grasslands and forested areas, and they also play an essential role as a food source for many predators. Some of the most common rodents to invade properties in our area include field mice, house mice, Norway rats, and roof rats.

Are rodents dangerous?

All rodents have continuously growing front incisors. To prevent these sharp teeth from overgrowing, they gnaw on anything they come across like drywall, flooring, insulation, pipes, wires, and personal items like clothing, furniture, and bedding. In addition to the structural damage they cause, rodents contaminate food, food prep areas, and the surfaces of your property with their saliva and excrement. Additionally, they spread bacteria and diseases such as hantavirus, leptospirosis, rat-bite fever, and salmonellosis that make people quite ill. Mice and rats are also known as agricultural pests because they wreak havoc in fields and gardens, destroying a large number of crops.

Why do I have a rodent problem?

Rodents are shy creatures and prefer to stay away from people, yet have no problem taking advantage of any food, water, or shelter our properties provide. They are first attracted to properties that offer them accessible places to forage for food such as open trash containers, compost piles, bird feeders, gardens, and outdoor eating areas. Once in your yard, while either nesting or foraging for food, they usually end up finding their way indoors to secure a secluded nesting spot away from harsh weather.

Where will I find rodents?

Mice and rats move inside homes and other buildings through openings they find in the foundation, exterior walls, and roof line. They also get in through vents, spaces around pipes and wires, and gaps around windows and doors. Once inside, they nest behind wall voids and large appliances, in attics, basements, cabinets, and crawlspaces. Outside, mice and rats nest in tall grass, wooded areas, fields, gardens, under decks, in sheds and garages, in a tree hollow, and the abandoned nests of other small animals.
