What are cockroaches?
Cockroaches are nocturnal insects that are major pests inside homes, warehouses, restaurants, hospitals, grocery stores, and any other building where there is food. Cockroaches are scavengers and are helpful with breaking down decaying plants, excrement, and dead animals when living outside and away from people. Some of the most common ants to invade properties in our area include American cockroaches, German cockroaches, and Oriental cockroaches.
Are cockroaches dangerous?
Cockroaches are dangerous social creatures and should not be welcome into any home or business. Cockroaches carry disease-causing pathogens and parasites on their bodies and legs that make people very ill. The piles of shed skins and excrement they leave behind aggravate allergies and asthma; this is especially true for young children. Another problem that cockroaches cause is a substance they secrete that stains surfaces and produces a bad odor. They regularly destroy fabrics and paper products.
Why do I have a cockroach problem?
Cockroaches infiltrate properties through open spaces around windows, underneath doors, and through openings in the roof line or exterior walls. They usually get inside while foraging for food but sometimes come in to escape extreme weather conditions. These insects are also introduced into homes and other buildings in packages, used appliances, used furniture, potted plants, grocery bags, and storage boxes. Cockroaches are prolific breeders; if even a few find their way in, there is potential for a large-scale infestation.
Where will I find cockroaches?
These ancient insects have been able to thrive because of their ability to adapt. Unfortunately, this means that cockroaches can live in a multitude of both indoor and outdoor environments. Outside, cockroaches live in wooded areas, gardens, in garbage piles, around drains, and in sewers. These locations are often close to the outside of homes and businesses, providing them with easy access inside. Cockroaches that do get in tend to choose damp, dark areas to hide where they can be out of sight of people. These locations include under sinks, in kitchen drawers and cabinets, in wall voids near pipes, and bathrooms.
