Bed Bugs

What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are parasitic pests that commonly invade homes and businesses. Bed bugs feed on the blood of mammals, and human blood happens to be their favorite food. Adults are reddish-brown and about 1/4 of an inch in length. Immature bed bugs (nymphs) are smaller than adults and keep their yellowish color until their first blood meal. Bed bugs are wingless and don’t jump; they move about efficiently by crawling onto our belongings or clothing. They emerge at night from their hiding spots to feed on their hosts while they sleep.

Are bed bugs dangerous?

Although bed bugs are not dangerous pests, you wouldn’t want them in your home or business. Knowing that these blood-sucking pests are around, feeding on your blood as you sleep, adds stress to your day and disrupted sleep at night. The main concern with bed bugs is their bite; people allergic to their saliva develop a raised rash that is very itchy and may lead to a secondary infection that requires medical attention. A bed bug infestation also causes damage to personal property caused by stained bedding, floors, furniture, mattresses, walls, and box springs with their blood and excrement.

Why do I have a bed bug problem?

Unfortunately, bed bug infestations are becoming a common occurrence and can pop up in any home or business. Bed bugs hitchhike from location to location by climbing onto people and their belongings. The ease and frequency of modern travel provides bed bugs with a hassle-free way to get around. Bed bugs are most often introduced into homes after you unknowingly come into contact with them, usually in a public place. Once inside your house, they only emerge from their hiding spots at night when you are sleeping. Their ability to stay out of sight allows an infestation to go undetected while populations grow from small to large in a very short time.

Where will I find bed bugs?

Knowing where bed bugs hide will help you to eradicate an infestation sooner rather than later. Common hiding spots include behind baseboards, wall hangings, wooden trim, in the cracks of floors, walls, wooden furniture, inside electronics, keyboards, wall voids behind electrical outlets, the seams of mattresses, box springs, and upholstered furniture. Additionally, bed bugs live and hide in public places that we visit regularly such as hotels, shopping centers, schools, libraries, and airports. These pests will find their way into your home or business after attaching themselves to bags or clothing.
